Week 6 - African Designers

African designers play a key role in the development of African culture. These experts are responsible for the promotion of such culture through the development of unique buildings across different nations within the continent. The famous pyramids from Egypt is a perfect example of the way in which African designers tend to promote the culture of the continent. However, recent studies suggest that the unique and diverse culture within some of the African nations is influenced by western culture. Ethiopia is a perfect example of a nation where some of the unique designs were developed based on such culture. As such, this occurrence makes it difficult to understand the contribution played by African designers. Only a few nations within the country have managed to base their designs on their personal knowledge, an occurrence that provides their buildings with unique identity and creativity.

Arguably, African culture can be maintained and promoted in a different way, such as the encouragement of designers within the continent to avoid the temptation of being influenced by western culture. One of the issues which makes it difficult to come up with unique designs within the continent is the hiring of designers from the western culture. Such designers believe that their understanding of western architecture should be applied within the buildings constructed in different parts of African nations. As such, it becomes difficult to come up with most constructions whose design can be attributed to the African originality. This influence is also responsible for the factors which are making it possible for some Africans to abandon their culture. From this argument, it is evident that African designers have a significant role to play in terms of maintaining the originality of their continent.

I believe that I can play a key role in the promotion of African culture through the application of my Masters in Architecture. My traveling experience has provided me with relevant knowledge regarding the various strategies which can be employed to avoid the influence of western culture. However, it should be clear that borrowing some design ideas from this culture is not harmful at all. The primary focus should be on the development of unique content and designs which are different from those of the western culture. This process can make it possible for other nations to identify our culture through the development of our buildings. I believe that we have a big role to play since we have to ensure that our younger generations are aware of the relevance of their culture and the processes which should be employed to maintain it in the future.

This discussion has focused on the role which can be played by African designers in the promotion of African culture. The influence of western culture has made it difficult for designers to come up with effective means of developing buildings that are of the African region. Even though the designs developed by the western culture are attractive, caution should be taken to ensure that the act of copying their knowledge is avoided. Designers within the continent of Africa should, therefore, base their designs on various factors such as the culture of their nations and historic occurrences experienced within the continent. This process can play a key role in the promotion of African culture.
